You are correct that buying gold is not allowed and its now very likely your account will be banned if you do.

There are so many sites becasue enforcement of copyright rules is spotty at best for companies outside the US. This explains why so many RMT sites and private servers are hosted over seas. China is one of the countries that does not enforce US copyright laws. This is also why so many pirated movies come from there as well.

Purchasing/selling ingame gold or items for real world money is a violation of Blizzards TOS. You've agreed to this the very first time you logged in and the first time you login after every patch. Your account will indeed be banned.

They have routines setup to flag certain activities that occur in the game and investigate them. In this case they will check where the gold came from and follow the trail. When it comes from known characters that facilitate this kind of transaction, the accounts involved are banned.

And as an extra added bonus, the sites that advertise this kind of thing are generally loaded with keyloggers. Just visiting one the sites could cause you to lose your account to hackers.

If you value your account, I would refrain from this activity. You might also read this statement from Blizzard:

bad, easy enough to make gold without buying it, collect cloth off humanoids & sell it, and make green items disenchant them & sell the mats for profit, buy cheap items, either disenchant or resell higher,
References :
I say screw Blizzard Terms of Agreements and just buy the GOLD! What is wrong with buying WOW gold? I think if Blizzard prohibits all players who participate in buying gold, then they just might slip to 2nd best MMORPG. Why? Well if you think about it, I think there are a lot of gold buyers out there but just don't like talking about it. It's almost like taking drugs or cigarettes, you know its bad for your system yet you take them because it feels good. Same thing with buying gold, Blizzard doesn't allow it, but its definitely good for their business and so it is for the players.

I buy gold all the time and I use all those virtual currency selling sites, like IGE.com. Their site has been doing this for the longest time, the most trusted site I think. Hell, without IGE WOW's popularity wouldn't reach their current status. There are these new Chinese virtual currency selling sites that do the same things IGE does but, well the only thing I'm not crazy about is their customer service...it's hard to converse with Chinese speaking individuals trying hard to speak in English.

In the future I think Blizzard should think of a way to integrate RMT selling sites into their business, or even thank them because in the end without these RMT sites who pretty much put WOW on the map....it definitely put WOW on China, Blizzard would have long been out of the MMORPG race.

possibly to scam you or something like that.... they get your money....you wait for the gold....and nothing happens, these are called scam sites. Another thing is Blizzard is trying to also protect your characters from the scam sites thats why they dont allow people to buy wow gold online.
